This is a great recipe for bored kids. They can make 90% of the recipe themselves, and just need an adult to help warm the liquid before adding the flour.
yields about 2 cups of play dough
1 cup water
1 tablespoon vegetable oil
1/2 cup salt
1 tablespoon cream of tartar
1 cup flour
- Combine water, oil, salt, cream of tartar in a saucepan and heat until warm. Salt does not need to be dissolved in order to remove from heat.
- Remove from heat and add flour. Dough will be very lumpy – don’t worry, this is normal!
- Stir, then knead until smooth.
- Add food coloring of your choice. My two boys got 2 quarters each and made four colors of dough.
The cream of tartar makes this dough last 6 months or longer, so resist the temptation to omit this ingredient if you don’t have it on hand.
Store this dough in an airtight container or bag.
If the dough is drying out, add a spritz of water to help to help revive the texture to a nice soft consistency.
